Truths that Lead To Rest

You ever feel anxious and panicked?  With sports, school, and work the schedules for our families can be verging on out of control.  There is so much to do and be at - man oh man.  Or have you ever had this experience?  You worked on something that was lost - your hard drive crashed, the project took a different direction, or it didn’t save.
I had a minor episode with panic came recently.  I was working on the biggest project for a pastor - the sermon.  I had finished it all up, but my computer ran out of battery and turned off.  And I love Macs, but they could be improved by an autosave function.  I turn on the computer and... a third of the sermon gone.  You can imagine my feeling.
Not sure what tends to panic you, but those times will come.  And because they do I wanted to share with you some truths that lead to rest.  The thoughts come from Psalm 62.
David wrote, “My soul finds rest in God alone.  He alone is my rock and my salvation.”
So one of the pictures for God in this psalm is a rock.  Consider that analogy.  A rock is something constant or unchangeable.  Kind of like David telling us in a crazy changing world, there is one who doesn’t change.
And consider some of things that will never change when it comes to God.  His presence with us will never change.  Whether at school, at work, on vacation, or in the hospital God is there.  He is there to uphold us and to help us.  His promises never change.  So when he tells us that we need not worry about what to eat, or what to wear because he so cares for us, we can trust in that promise.  The salvation he won can never change.  As Jesus gave his life the cross he spoke the words, “It is finished,” which means all who would look and believe in him are saved.  It’s a victory that can never be reversed or challenged.
So find rest in God who is a rock.  God is always with you, working for you, and has saved you.  Search out this rest as you hear from God regularly in your home or at church.
But David isn’t done with an awesome psalm of comfort.  A couple more thoughts.   He wrote, “One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving.”
It’s hard not to be in awe of God’s power on display at creation.  What power to mold mountains, create galaxies, and form seas.  That same awesome power is available to us.  We can call on his name and unleash his power to help in our circumstances.  We can trust in his power when we are weak, or to get the job done.  God’s strength is an awesome source of comfort for us.
And then consider his love.  A love available each day, he promised his mercies are new every morning.  A love that was displayed when Jesus’ gave his life for us.  I’m convinced no one loves better than God, and that love is for us all.
So knowing all this about God, that he is a rock, that he is strong and loving - may you find rest.  He can give strength when you need it, and comfort when you are down.  May you know the blessing of our God who is a rock.  God bless!
