Limits of Faith

One of the great parts about living in this part of the country is the ability to go to 6 Flags Great America. And I donʼt know about you, but whenever I go I know which rides I can go on, and which ones to avoid. For instance I can do anything with a big drop, just donʼt put me upside down. So I know I can do the Viper, and American Eagle - but unless I want to be sick for the next hour I cannot do Batman. You got to know your limits.

Do you know I think many people approach following Jesus with the same mentality. We may say or think, “God I will follow you this far, but no further. I have my limits. Donʼt call me into something Iʼm uncomfortable with or havenʼt done before.”

Do you think God is looking for a faith with limits? I donʼt. In fact I believe there are life circumstances when he will take you from the Whizzer, and put you on the Raging Bull. And as you look down that big drop that scary situation, if you could youʼd get off. But that isnʼt what heʼs looking for. The disciples of Jesus followed him through heavy persecution even imprisonment and death. So how do we follow with faith unlimited?

It starts by seeing how Jesusʼ love for us was unlimited. I consider the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus knew the “ride” he was getting on Good Friday. It was much scarier than any ride at 6 Flags. He even prayed if there was any other way, letʼs do that. But he followed God the Father. He bore the beatings and the cross. He bore the emotional heartache of being forsaken by his Father. He followed through it all - for us. So we could inherit eternal life, and have forgiveness for an imperfect faith.

Itʼs in seeing Jesusʼ love unlimited, that we want to respond. Not because weʼre saved by doing so, but because as he loved so we love.

And hereʼs an upside for following with faith unlimited. The scarier the situation, the greater our opportunity to see Godʼs strength. If God is calling you into something terrifying as you follow him, whether it be his directives in our relationships with others or how we go about our work, weʼll see his strength at work in us. Weʼll see how he can enable us to do what heʼs calling us into.

Weʼre in a series on Moses at Amazing Love. And the Israelites were called into the land God promised for them. They knew they were supposed to take it. But they were afraid. They looked at the giant people and their fortified cities, and said “Never, weʼve got our limits.” And they missed out. They were still forgiven, but they missed out on what could have been theirs. They spent the next 40 years wandering in a desert and one generation never got the good things in store for them. But the next generation saw the strength of God work on their behalf as they took the promised land. God was on their side.

If we follow with a faith unlimited, we donʼt have to worry about what we would have missed out on. More than that, itʼs an opportunity to live an adventure and see Godʼs strength pull you through whatever heʼs calling you into.
